Lucky Star is a slice of life 4-panel manga about Izumi Konata, an underachieving high schooler. She likes computer games and manga just like you! Most chapters revolve around her and her group of friends spending time together, navigating studies, exams, and the quandaries of life.
I'll get straight to the point: we were unimpressed by this manga. We didn't find much depth or charm within the characters, nor feel that they were meaningfully distinct from each other. Each has a few traits that set them apart from their friends, and most punchlines revolve around those traits. Konata is a slothful pervert who struggles to read the room*, Kagami is straightforward and studious, Tsukasa is softspoken and not as studious, and Miyuki is polite and, uh, wears glasses.
The simplistic moeblob art style is undoubtedly iconic and influential to the CGDCT genre as a whole (for better or worse), but it does little to help the cast stand apart from one another or express themselves in a way that feels dynamic. Moreover, there isn't much interesting happening in the way of setting. There are a few locations, mostly school or home, that the girls interact, but most strips appear to take place in a boundless white void.
All of this is fine, though, if the comic is funny. It's a comedy, isn't it? So, is the comic funny? Unfortunately, we didn't think so. We thought the humor was incredibly rote, and we only chuckled handful of times over the course of the volume. Usually, we'd attribute this to a cultural blindspot, but it isn't as if we didn't understand the jokes. Too many, though, are reliant on you being endeared to the cast. Oh, that Konata, she sure does have a short attention span and a lack of interest in studying. She is certainly rude to her friend Kagami. Oh, that Garfield sure does love lasagna!
Do you see?
We have little interest in these buglike creatures and the machinations of their inner worlds. Back to 4chan with them!
* Can you tell Konata was our favorite? Haha.
